The short answer is about an hour. The longer answer explains why that number moves, why it is longer in a cold driveway than in a warm shop, and what to avoid for the first couple of days so the installation lasts the life of the car.
What is happening during the first hour
The windshield is bonded to the car with urethane, a moisture-curing adhesive. When it is applied it is a thick paste; as it cures it becomes a tough, rubbery solid that holds the glass to the frame. "Safe drive-away time" is the point at which the urethane has cured enough to hold the windshield in place in a collision, including the load from a passenger airbag. That is the number your installer quotes, and it comes from the adhesive manufacturer's testing.
With the fast-cure urethanes we use, safe drive-away is about one hour at normal temperatures and humidity. The bond keeps strengthening for 24 to 48 hours after that.
Why cold changes it
Urethane cures with moisture from the air, and cold air holds very little moisture. At -10°C, cure times stretch considerably; at -20°C, some products will not reach a safe bond at all. That is why we use a cold-weather urethane for Ottawa winters and why, below about -15°C, we ask for a garage or covered spot for mobile installations. In a heated shop, winter has no effect. The first 48 hours
- Leave the retention tape on for a day if we applied it. It holds the mouldings in place while the urethane sets.
- No automatic car washes for 48 hours. High-pressure jets and brushes can lift a moulding or force water into a bead that has not fully cured. A gentle hand wash is fine after 24 hours.
- Close doors gently for the first day. Slamming a door with the windows up pressurizes the cabin and pushes outward on the glass.
- Crack a window slightly when parked in the sun, for the same reason.
- Do not remove the tape or mouldings yourself if something looks loose. Call us; that is what the warranty is for.
What is normal
A faint urethane smell inside the car for a day or two. A small amount of squeaking from the mouldings in the first days. Water on the dash after a rain is not normal, and neither is wind noise at highway speed that was not there before; both are covered by our lifetime warranty, and both are easy to fix if you call promptly.
ADAS calibration and driving
If your car needed a dynamic ADAS calibration, a technician drives it after the safe drive-away time to complete the procedure, so the hour is built into the appointment. If it needed a static calibration, that is done in the shop while the urethane cures. Either way, when we hand back the keys, the car is ready to drive. More on calibration.
