A stone off a truck on the 417 does not have to become a new windshield. Chips smaller than a toonie are filled and cured in about 30 minutes, at the shop or at your driveway.
A rock chip is a small break in the outer layer of laminated glass. On its own it is stable. What breaks it open is stress: the temperature swing between a warm garage and a cold morning, a pothole on Hunt Club, the flex of the body when you pull into a sloped driveway. Each of those can send a crack running from the chip, and once a crack reaches the edge of the glass, repair is off the table.
Repaired early, a chip costs a fraction of a replacement and is usually covered without a deductible. Left until spring, it is a new windshield and possibly an ADAS recalibration on top.
Bullseyes, half-moons, star breaks and small combination breaks up to about the size of a toonie are all good candidates. Chips directly in the driver's line of sight are repairable, but a faint mark will remain, so we will talk you through the trade-off. Chips in front of a forward camera, chips at the edge of the glass, and chips that have already run into cracks longer than a few centimetres need replacement.
